Dual sport tires come in a variety of types which suite different terrains. While some are geared primarily towards the street, others lean heavily towards off road use. There are also dual sport tires which run right down the middle, these dual sport tires are a compromise between 50% dirt and 50% street in true dual sport fashion.
Dirt oriented dual sport tires offer superior traction in off road conditions. They stand up well to abuse, are DOT approved and offer great a compromise if your motorcycle spends the majority of its life off road. While these dual sport tires have ample grip off road, they don’t offer the world’s greatest grip once they’re on the tarmac. While riding on road, the knobbies of dirt oriented dual sport tires tend to patter and induce some wobbling at higher speeds from the front end. Dirt dual sport tires are the ideal choice for riders spending more than 70% of their time in off road conditions.
On the other hand, street oriented dual sport tires offer great grip on road. If your dual sport spends more than 70% of its time on the road, this is probably the best choice for you. While street minded dual sport tires have ample amounts of traction on road, they don’t make the best off road tires. While still capable off road, street minded dual sport tires don’t offer the knobbies which dirt minded dual sport tires do. The tread is generally smooth, though more aggressive than full street tires.
